Hervey bay is a seaside town in the state of Queensland.

History[]

'Hervey's Bay'[]

The Butchalla are the Indigenous tribes that once settled around Hervey Bay. The first European sighting was from Captain Cook as he was charting the East Coast of Australia. What Cook did not realise as he was charting the area is that Fraser Island was not connected to Australia. Cook named it Hervey's Bay after Augustus John Harvey, the third Earl of Bristol.

Modern Hervey Bay[]

Until the 1980s, Hervey Bay was serviced by a rail link. This was crucial for the Sugar Cane Industry, until road transport was used instead. In 1984, Hervey Bay became a city. It earned the title of a city after it had grown in business, tourism and population. But to the locals they sometimes still call it a seaside village.\

Whale Watching[]

Hervey Bay is nicknamed the Whale Watching capital of Australia. Between every April and October, humpback whales migrate along the coast of Hervey Bay. Ever since 1992, Whale Numbers have increased to 2000 to 7000 in 2005.
