Yeppoon and Emu Park are two coastal towns situated in the Capricorn region of Queensland

History[]

Yeppoon[]

Yeppoon was first settled by the Ross Family in 1865. In the early town, Fruit Crops, Cattle and Wool were major exports. Sugar Cane was grown from 1883 to 1903 and was discontinued due to financial corruption and rain. Pineapples, Mangoes and other fruits have since contributed to the Economy. In 2015, Cyclone Marcia passed over Yeppoon and the Capricorn Coast as a Category 5 system. It left more than 13,500 residents without power. It has a number of Heritage Listed Spots such as the Railway Station, the War Memorial and the State School Building

Emu Park[]

The Emu Park township was founded when families from Rockhampton established seaside holiday homes. Emu Park was connected to Rockhampton by Train in 1888 and a branch to Yeppoon was established in 1910. Hewittville was the town's original name. It changed to Emu Park in 1890. By the mid 1920s the town had a cinema, two hotels, shops, a court house and more. In 1926, A Small Pier was opened by the wife of the prime minister, Stanley Bruce.

Events[]

  • Yeppoon Lions Pinefest: Held around the middle of October every year since 1967, the residents of Yeppoon create a parade decked out with floats and people in Pineapple costumes to raise funds for charity. Originally it also included a mascot named Pineapple Pete.
